Outline: Gestalt therapy has roots in both Eastern and Western philosophy. Taoism is one of the sources it draws on. In many ways, Gestalt can be seen as an expression of Taoism, as a psychological practice. This topic will be explored from a variety of angles.

Outline: Gestalt therapy originated in the 1940’s, was developed in the 1950’s, and was popularised in the 1960’s. It’s original form, as taught by Fritz Perls, was dynamic, confrontive, based on the use of Here and Now awareness, and emphasised self support and existential responsibility. Sixty years later, it has evolved, true to the roots of I-thou dialogue, and Field Theory, into a contemporary form which has softened and transformed Gestalt practice in many ways. The Gestalt therapy which has been taught and practiced in South East Asia has resembled the original Gestalt ethos and practice. Does this need to change?

Outline: Authenticity is at the core of existential ideas which have influenced Gestalt therapy. The therapeutic perspective on it has evolved from the original encounter groups and ‘confessional honesty’, to incorporating an ‘ethic of care’. How can we understand the place of authenticity in the practice of Gestalt which incorporates an understanding of the importance of relationship.

Outline: Gestalt has many applications —as a psychotherapy, a form of coaching, a useful tool in organisational consulting, a guide to a particular sytle of management, and it has also been applied in the educational sphere. Fritz Perls had a vision of Gestalt as a way of living, and at the end of his life, formed a community with this in mind. Erving Polster proposed Gestalt to be applied in community-life groups. How can we conceive of Gestalt as a way of living, more than just a therapy?
